Paint properties reaction question.

I know certain paint properties react depending on what is spray on top of what. Meaning since Lacquer being the hottest, will enamels sprayed on top of lacquer have adverse reaction to causing it to look like orange peel?

I guess what I'm trying to ask is what is safe between lacquer, enamel, and acrylic.

Also, weathering question I have is what the process that works without ruining a perfectly good paint job.?

Enamel based weathering product on top of acrylics?
Acrylic based weathering product on top of enamel?
What about lacquer based weathering products (if any existed)?
Which would work on top of lacquer paint? Enamel? Acrylic? or Either?

I believe that Model Master Metalizer paints are a lacquer. If so, I have used those and airbrushed enamels on top of them with no ill effects. I have also hand brushed enamels over Metalizer with no adverse results as well. I can’t answer for acrylics, but seeing how those are usually not as hot as enamels, I would guess they should be good to use as well.

The main thing for any dissimilar layers is giving the lower layer plenty of time to dry and cure before applying the next layer over it.

I use alclad for all my metal painting, I always spray them either over acrylic or Tamiya primer with no ill effects. Most alclad paint says to spray over a acrylic gloss black. If you spray a enamel black then seal it with a acrylic gloss coat I think you should be good.

The original Alclad black primer is an enamel. It's hard as nails when dry but takes weeks to fully harden. Enamels are a close cousin of oils and this is their common weekness. Lacquers tend to bite more into polystyrene and dry much faster. After 48h you can put any other kind of lacquer on them. You have to spray them in thin layers so affecting the layer beneath is not an issue. Just don't hose it on.
Acrylic clears (water based and hybrid) work perfectly on lacquer paints as long they had at least 48h to gas out.

Oh, and weathering with enamel products on lacquers also works. But I prefer a solvent that's a bit less aggressive called odourless thinner (synthetic turpentine) tinted with oils.

No textbook knowledge, just personal experience.

So I see this primer called Alclad Black Primer/Microfiller. From what it sounds, it looks to be a good product. I'd rather use that than Alclad's Gloss Black Base. Last I heard it sucked.

Alclad's black base microfiller is really good stuff. I love it, but it goes fast as a primer. It's super thin and lends itself perfect as a base, for which it is designed. I also agree with the Alclad black you mentioned, it takes forever to dry, I mean FOREVER. So, it's not fun to work with.
