Dutch TF 104G and Soesterberg birds

Here are a couple of shots of my recently completed Italeri 1/32 TF 104G in Dutch livery and all 5 of the aircraft that served with the 32nd DFS/FIS/TFS. The latest addition is the F 4E. All are 1/48 scale.

I hadn't thought about that the Dutch were flying Hawker Hunters while I was there. The Hunter is a very nice looking aircraft.

Airfix has a 1/48 Hunter with available Dutch livery. I'd be able to use the same paint as my Dutch 104.

I think the Hawker Hunter is one of the prettiest and most graceful of all the early cold war aircraft. The original p-80 Shooting Star also had really graceful lines. The requirements of high speed, high performance aircraft pretty much dictate their form and they've lost some of that gracefulness. When I was stationed with the 32nd in Holland with the F-102's we very often flew night intercepts on the Hunters which were stationed on the Dutch side of the base. In those days the computers in our weapon system were all analog and had some moving parts. One night one of our pilots was locked on to a Hunter and a moving potentiometer in the radar tracking system failed and stopped moving. The pilot wasn't getting accurate range to target info and he tracked right into the Hunter's canopy. We lost about 3 feet of the port wing, the Dutch lost a plane and a pilot.
