Acrylic Primer Questions

Carlos... I am so curious to know what the kit is, curious enough to ask. First, I will guess that it is the 1/300 USS Delong DE-684 by Lindberg... and I will probably be wrong. Is Revell's "Missile Guided Fleet" in 1/300?

Yes, it is going to based off of the Lindberg DE kit. But it will not be the DeLong. I will give a full explanation in the build thread.

A few old Revell “box scale” ship kits are in the 1/300 range. Their USS Fletcher is supposedly 1/301, as is their Forrest Sherman, and their Campbell and Eastwind Coast Guard cutters are also in the same scale area.

That is small indeed. I remember doing a couple torpedo launchers for 1/700 scale ships that were smaller... and needed to be assembled! You should have no problems with that one, provided you find a good primer to coat it.

Hah, Medic,,,,,,,now you know why I quit 1/700 ship modeling.

I had boxes and boxes of detail parts for many different navies. All for ships 1" to 6" long. Some of those items had to be assembled to make a 20mm or 40mm gun, or a fire director or range finder.

I do have one question for Carlos, though. Are those Shapeways parts more detailed than what is available in plastic in 1/350? Or are they not available in the scale that your model is?

I ask because I've looked at the prices from time to time, and a pair of something that is produced in 3D printing costs the same as an entire box of 1/700 detail parts cost.

Oh, and give the Stynylrez a try, it is one of the very best Acrylic primers available. (Mission should work too, although it is a different formula, so they aren't interchangeable, but Mission might give you more freedom to use Enamels over it )

Rex, the 3-D printed stuff on the Shapeways site is mind boggling. A HUUUUUGE selection. As far as what is better detailed... well, I’m sure it’s better than the folded PE stuff that you see for things like 20mm and 40mm AA guns. Rounded with relief as opposed to the flat stuff. Compared to styrene things out there, I suppose that depends upon the kit. Some of the Dragon stuff is fantastic as molded. But some other 1/350 kits, not as nice. I just went with this 3-D printed stuff as it saved me from having to do a good amount of scratch building to dress this kit up.

Thanks for the recommendation of the Mission Models primer. That is one of the acrylic primers carries at Brookhurst, a local shop. I’ve been very happy with the Mission paints, so I’ll look at that option as well.
