What washes are compatible with this gloss coat?

As you know, I use a lot of Tamiya products. Lately though I’ve been branching out. I like Mr. Surfacer so much that I thought perhaps I’d give this stuff, and their flat clear, a try:



So for this here Mr. Color Gloss Super Clear, what options do I have in terms of washes? This is a lacquer, it I’m not mistaken. So acrylic washes then, correct? And if you use this yourself, what washes for panel lines and so forth do you like to use?

Oil, ground pigment, chalks... the whole shebang. I prefer quick dry oils since I have no patience.Winsor & Newton Griffin Quick Dry Raw Umber 554... Burnt Sienna 74...

Oh, I suppose I should’ve also asked if the Mr. Leveling Thinner I’ll bebusing with this could potentially destroy a paint job done with Tamiya acrylics LOL Is that possible?

Gamblin mineral spirits... for oils. I am sure W & N make an equivalent. I use good brushes too but I like good tools. You could probably use a soft foam makeup applicator or an old shirt too.

I would not use any Mr Hobby clears on Tamiya acrylics without testing. Actually I just would not clear coat acrylics except with what John uses from Alclad’s range. From a year back on spaceships using Tamiya acrylics I used Future followed by a UV Flat coat from Japan.

You should be able to use oil and enamel washes over that gloss clear. If you use oils, I highly recommend Mona Lisa thinner, as it is VERY mild. But like Bruce said, it is best to experiment on a paint mule first before you commit to your primary project.
Now for acrylic washes if you’re working with something like Flory’s, you’ll be good with that base.

Bruce, also- I haven’t had too many problems costing Tamiya Acrylics with clear coats. Granted, I’ve been using Tamiya Clear and Flat Clear up to this point, thin coats. Layers. You know how I do. Only issue I’ve had is some of that frosting. Which is why I’m trying the Mr. Color.

I use mostly these 3 base oil colors but would want to increase my collection with white and some ocre color



And I use very simply hardware store thinner... I love the smell, cannot understand those who wants odorless thinner.... (just a joke)

I think I can get that here at a store nearby. Don’t get me wrong, I like using my crushed pastel, but for things like exhaust stains, and panel line washes, I’d rather use paint and save the pigment for simulating rust, dirt on tires, and so forth.

I have been thinking about limiting acrylic color coats to avoid fragility and having to add a clear protective coat... plus I just prefer lacquer and enamel.

I have not used “Van Gogh” brand oils. I was wondering if real engine oil on cured lacquer would eat through the finish. I am sure some modeler somewhere has done this.
