Supermarine Seafire - colors?

Post by tigrazor »

Hi there,

I need some help for an upcoming project: Revells Supermarine Seafire (ex Special Hobby). Its supposed to be a machine from the British Pacific Fleet 1945/46 and its camo is blue grey/dark green. The lower part is a light green (is that "Sky", "Duck Egg Green" or even something else?!).

Revel instructions say Ill need to mix something, but Im pretty sure there are some correct colors. But which ones?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Lucas,
the (then) official FAA/Royal Navy camouflage, officially referred to as "Temperate Sea Scheme" , comprised the following colours:

Extra Dark Sea Grey
Dark Slate Grey
Sky

In order to give you an idea of the shade of these colours, I'd draw on Drewe Manton's Seafire.
IMHO he captured the actual shades quite accurately.

In either case, I'd suggest to tint Sky with a whiff of white.

What range of colours are you planning to use on your Seafire?

Wow. That was exactly what I was looking for. Id use either Tamiya (Sky) and/or Humbrol for the camo. J.A. Green seems to be a lighter variant of "Sky".

TAMIYA XF-14, Japanese Army Gray, is spot on.
XF-21, "Sky", has a slightly more greenish tint, though.

Extra Dark Sea Grey -> Humbrol 123 (enamel/acrylic) or Humbrol 125

Dark Slate Grey -> Humbrol 224 (enamel/acrylic)
Rather medium green with a distinctive greyish tint than "dark green".

Absolute useful information here for me, too! Thanks, Kurfürst, for sharing your stunning knowledge here. Going to print this and put it inside my Seafire box! :)

Lucas, we have the same kit here! Mine was posted on the old place...

I hope to see your build as well, Thomas.

Erik, mea culpa! Its indeed XF-14 that I have here. In some weeks there will be an expo around, so I can pre-order the colors for the camo and the shop owner can bring them most probably! Sehr gut! ;)

Just for info: Are there Tamiya options as well?

Revell says "Himmelblau 59" - a quite similar color, but as far as I can remember not available seperately, is it (only in a RAF color combo). I have it here, but its a bit older now. Maybe I have to test it first - if I ever use it at all (somehow I dont trust older Revell colors).

Many thanks for the hint, Erik!

Your German is exceptionally good!

I'd suggest XF-54 "Dark Sea Gray".
As to Dark Slate Grey, Tamiya has to pass on that one.

Mixing Tamiya XF-62 (Olive Drab) and XF-65 (Field Gray) also results in a decent DSG equivalent.
There isn't any 100% match, by the way. ;)

But that should help. Regarding things like scale effect, Pacific weather etc, this should be pretty close!

I'm also planning to build another Seafire this year - the Airfix F.47 with some AM stuff.

A good companion for my Mk.XVII.
