Stikpusher wrote: Wed Sep 18, 2024 7:04 am Chris it’s a great discussion subject. Box art, like any other form of painting, is quite subjective as to what is pleasing to the viewer. I think one has a hard time of trying to top the work of the artists that Revell was using from the 60’s into the 70’s when photos of the actual model became the norm. I think the Revell 1/32 Wildcat had the best box art of any F4F kit up to today. And like I said before, their B-17 box arts still look damn good compared to this fabulous work.

Check out this site for a trip back in time in regards to this area…

Thanks for the link Carlos. Personally I have always liked the original Revell 1/32 P-40E Box art as well as the Aleutian Tiger Art.

I did like those as well. I can’t think of one Revell 1/32 box art from that era that was not great. :hmm:

Here is another head scratcher. A recon mustang dropping his tanks as he is about to engage the enemy :giggles:
Not sure why anyone would paint this aircraft from this angle either, unless they want to make sure we spot the camera?

Let's keep beating this horse shall we? Ok, we did not beat it that long to start with...
Anyone know what Monogram was doing with this box art? The nose art is on the left side right? Wouldn't that be what you want to show? Was this a copyright issue like with Yeager's nose art? Weird...

That could be it Chris - it does seem a strange choice of angle.

Yeah... I got in a mood and couldn't resist.

Even my missus calls me a fan a-hole at times. I take it as a loving term of endearment. :giggles:

My guess is that it might be to hide the swastika kill marks that are supposed to be on the left side canopy hood frame. You know how some countries have laws forbidding that sort of marking. This way they don’t have to change the box for export to those places.

I would guess that the angle is to show off the camera port. And recon Mustangs were known to get into a scrap now and again. At least they had the guns to do so if need be. Accurate Miniatures did something similar with their Allison engined recon Mustang box art.

No drop tanks though…
