What is this kit like? I found it for under $20, is this a steal or a trap? I don't mind a little fixing and doing to get it right, but I would rather know what I am getting...
Thanks for anyone who answers

It builds OK but has some fuselage shape issues. I like the Airfix Spitfires in 1/48. They have a 14e, kit AO5135.

I’ve built it. Aside from the contours of the spinner being a bit too bulbous it’s a very nice kit. It’s well detailed and well engineered. I would just suggest new decals because Academy decals can be problematic and the kit decals are a bit translucent.

Carrying on with the academy theme, I have been looking at hobbyterra and I am interested in the 1/72 F86. Never built a sabre, is this kit any good?
Also how about the academy 1/48 Messerschmitt 109t2? Never actually heard of that version of the 109 but it looks cool to me.
Annnnnd what about the academy 1/48 f8f?
I have a few italeri kits in mind too, but I will allow for answers first.

I've heard the,Academy F-86 is very nice. The 109T was supposed to be for the German Navy on the carrier which never came to be. Basically the t-1 had the carrier equipment and the t-2 did not. Very similar in performance to a 109e

Academy f8f is a rebox of the hobby craft kit

I can’t say anything on the F-86. I’ve never built one in 1/72.

The Academy Bf-109 T2 is based off of a Hobbycraft molding. Not the best out there, but not bad either.

The Academy F8F is, like TJ said, a rebox of the Hobbycraft kit. And it is very nice. Certainly one of their better later kits. And there are aftermarket items available to really make it shine.

Here's the thing about Academy kits. Open the box, dig out the decals and promptly throw them away. They are by far the worst decals ever.

Depends on the kit. Some of their kits have Cartograf decals, which are top of the line. Just check the box and sheet to confirm. Some work ok, but can be a bit translucent, as they are on my Spitfire above. And yes, some are like most newspapers and only suitable for puppy training or the bottom of your bird cage…
