I've known Jon on-line for the best part of 10 years and he's a really great guy. He puts a lot of effort into his blog and I think he deserves to be read more. He kind of builds all sorts, but gives a lot of practical tips as well.

Just thought I'd share it.

The Chaps name is Jon Bius. He's a pretty damn good aircraft modeler and Spitifire Guru, and although he builds mainly OOB with a minimal use of AM, he does build lots - and I mean lots - like 100 plus a year. He's recently been bitten by the Sci-fi bug and now builds a mix of all sorts.

From his “Heretical thoughts...” on Eduard tooling:

“I really kept up with all the publicity, read all the reports, watched the blog, participated in the online chat with Vladimir Sulc. It’s weird, but I swear they seem to have been more intent on impressing us with engineering than with seeking build-ability. It absolutely has some of the most amazing detail I’ve ever seen in an injection molded kit. I thought the Tamiya P-47 was incredible, but some of the parts on this kit made my jaw drop. So precise, so tiny- amazing work. Yet as I build it, I feel more and more like it was an attempt to impress with the sprues than to focus on the real product- the final build.”

I own two Eduard kits—one is an Albatross and the other is an Anton—and his statement lines up with my feelings that I won’t be soon building either one. I chalk this up to just not being ready to do the kind of intense fiddling necessary for assembly, basically. However I have Wingnut Wings kits that exemplify basic construction possibilities; indeed I made the decision to buy WW because the very top of their list of basic building techniques is “you can build these kits without adding the rigging,” because they know how big and scary the idea of rigging is and they want their kitsets to be built by beginners as well. I feel that is a different set of design parameters then the ones used by Eduard; I appreciate both but favor the basic assembly option.
