Here’s a question for you – when was the last time (if ever) you built a Helicopter?

Having finished my Spitfire over the weekend (pictures to follow) I was casting around the stash for something else to chuck onto the bench when I came across a Revel 1/72 Eurocopter Tiger.

As I started working on it today I got to thinking that I’d never seen the kit built up, and I don’t know why as it’s a nice looking kit of a cool looking attack helicopter – but then you really don’t see that many helicopter builds at all.

On the 4 of 5 forums I go on, I can only think of two people that build them on a regular basis– but why is that, what is it about them that doesn’t get our collective modelling juices flowing as much as, say, a WWII fighter?

There are plenty of them out there, they're certainly full of character and anyone who lives anywhere built up probably see loads of them - yet we still don't built them.

It's been a few years since I have finished one. And a few years more that that since starting a chopper. I have several in my stash, most in 1/48, but some 1/32 as well. But you're right, I should tackle another soon.... The question is, which one???

I've got a couple in my stash currently, a 1/48 USCG HH-60J Jayhawk and a 1/32 UH-72 Lakota. They are on my radar to complete; however, at the current rate, not sure when that is going to be.

Built the 1/48 Blackhawk for a group build last year and had fun...just don't know enough about them to be able to go crazy- but I do love an Apache or the like

Aside from the 1/16 Flettner I remember having build Monogram´s Mi-24 Hind when it got available. A quick search got me 1987 as the date of my build. Maybe about time to do another one? Hmm...

They are definitely under-represented, as far as builds go. They do seem to take up the least amount of space on contest tables too. I used to build em a lot more...maybe one chopper for every 5-6 planes. Much less these days, and I really don't know why! I keep buying the kits. I did do a Kiowa earlier this year, and have a pair of Hinds in the works though. I've only done 11 choppers since getting back into building (09)...and I've got over 200 builds since then. Two dozen in the stash!

I have several in the stash. Need to get an Apache and a Cobra still.

Oh and some helos that are operating around Houston right now.

The last helicopter kit I've done was decades ago - a Navy Blackhawk. My first was waaaaaaay back in the 70s - a Huey chopper with rockets. I agree, helicopters are under appreciated. I have a couple on my wish list though.
