I hate...absolutely HATE PE...largely because I have the dexterity of a coked out hypoglycemic chihuahua with Parkinsons after drinking an entire pot of coffee during an earth quake. However, it's one of those things were I'm determined to not be beaten by something so I keep trying.
I've got a Tamiya Yamato with a huge White Ensign PE set (like 4 A4 size sheets) that I plan to build for a GB...I'm looking forward to it..then again not really...and I'm confident it will end in disaster...but you have to challenge yourself at some point...don't you?
I never understood how those artists succeed to add those ultra-tiny PE parts to a ship model. But I have full confidence in your skills, Les! So, just start to build the Yamato here. In case it will end in disaster you already have succeeded to actually recreate the ship´s fate...

I was reading somewhere about using a drop of Future or something like that for placing small PE (is that an oxymoron?). It is supposed to hold it in "place" whilst you fiddle yourself silly getting it where you want it. Then you can place a bit of CA on it.
I don't know if I have enough popcorn for this one, Sharkey.

I just signed up here but I can honestly say that at least 99% of the models I build are done OOB and with minimal, if any, research. I'll only do research when I need to clarify something about the actual build, or if I need to see more specifically a markings option that I want to do (such as "Cuckoo" the British-captured Panther) I also only build OOB; the only time I do P/E is when it is included and all the smallest parts stay on their sprues! The only other time I'll do anything aftermarket is if it is included in a kit I buy secondhand, or someone gives it to me as a gift. Only once did I buy an aftermarket canopy; it was for a 1/48th scale (GASP!!) aircraft i was resurrecting. More on that later....
